In my work as a potter I try to find a balance between the organic origins of clay and a refined functional piece. Most of my pieces have been influenced by images I have observed in nature during my backpacking treks in the Adirondacks and the Pacific Northwest. Just as I emerge from every hike covered in dust and sweat from head to toe, emerging from the studio I am always covered in clay. I love the texture of the clay and its natural movement. These characteristics are able to invoke different aspects of the natural world. This year I began using the kick wheel. It has allowed me to connect with the clay and the process that goes into making each piece. I do not sit down with a piece in mind, instead I allow my hands to be guided by the clay. After many months of learning and experimentation I now create pieces that allow the beauty of such a natural material to shine through. By leaving most of the pieces unglazed on the outside, the observer is able to feel and see this natural beauty.
