Welcome to the Ceramics Department at the Horace Mann School where students engage in some of the oldest ceramic processes while employing new technologies. Students investigate functional pottery and sculptural objects through the use of pinching, coiling, slab construction, solid mass construction, press molding, the pottery wheel, engobes, glazes, wax resists, scraffito, slip trailing, digitally produced decals, and a wide variety of other techniques. Traditional processes are explored while experimentation is strongly encouraged. As ceramics students advance through the program, they work to become skilled, creative, responsible, and autonomous artists.
